What are the Municipal Elections?

Municipal council is the organ using the highest authority. Municipal councils influence the appearance of the living environment and which kind of healthcare services there is.

At the municipal elections the citizens have a chance to elect the councillors of the municipalities.

Who is entitled to vote?

Entitled to vote in municipal elections are:

Citizens of Finland or another Member State of the European Union as well as of Iceland and Norway who have reached the age of 18 not later than on the day of the election, and whose municipality of residence, as defined by law, is the municipality in question on the 23rd of April 2021  (on the 51st day before election day),

Also other foreigners who have reached the age of 18 not later than on the day of the election, and whose municipality of residence, as defined by law, is the municipality in question on the 23rd of April 2021 (on the 51st day before election day), and who at that time have had a municipality of residence in Finland for an uninterrupted period of two years and

If you are entitled to vote you will get information about it by letter. You can vote at the municipality you have been living at on 23.4.2021.

Why should I vote?

For example, the municipal council of Helsinki has four under 30 year-old councillors. The average age of the councillors chosen in 2017 was 45.  The municipal elections is a chance to influence who is making decisions for you.

At the municipal elections of 2017 the voting percent of people from 18 to 24 years old was 35. At the same election the voting percent of people in the age range of 25 to 34 was 42,9. In the Helsinki metropolitan area there are about 90 000 university students. This means that the vote and opinion of students is important. By voting you can decide which kind of city you live in.

At this moment we are choosing people to decide about:

  •  Where to build student apartments
  • How to develop public transport
  •  What kind of sports and leisure services there are in the city
  • How much is invested in education
