10 tips for a new student

Hi and congratulations for getting into Haaga-Helia! The first academic year is full of new things and being a fresher can be stressful before you get accustomed to the university environment. To make the start of your studies as smooth as possible, here are some tips for you!
1. Be active at the beginning of your studies You might regret missing out on the first events. Try to participate as much as you can, you’ll always be able to get another work shift but you’re a fresher only once!  During the first weeks and months, important social networks and memories are created, so make the most of this time by getting to know new people and participating in activities. In the future, it will also be easier to participate in events when you know at least a few familiar faces!

2. Plan your studies If possible, plan your studies as early as you can. Familiarize yourself with what the school has to offer and what interests you personally. Setting some kind of goals will make things easier and give you direction for the coming years.

3. Be yourself You don’t need to pretend to be something you’re not and you don’t have to do something just because the person next to you is doing it. Be confident in yourself and make your own choices. Your genuine self will attract the right people to you.

4. Try different learning techniques Now is a good time to try new learning techniques for you. There are plenty of tips and techniques for learning online, so check them out! Studying doesn’t have to be just boring cramming from books; studying with a friend is worth trying too. The library has also been proven to be a great study space and also there are many working spaces on the campuses that can be reserved via Peppi!

5. Participate in organizational activities If you want to get to know even more new people and have wonderful experiences, consider participating in organizational activities. Through organizational activities, you will learn new things and gain more perspectives on student life. This can open up new opportunities and significantly enrich your study years; many also make lifelong friends this way!

6. Ask for advice from other students Ask other students, especially those in higher years, for advice on student exchange programs, specializations, internships etc. Experienced students can offer valuable tips and perspectives that will make your decisions easier.

7. Utilize the expertise of professionals If you face challenges, don’t hesitate to seek help from professionals such as academic advisors, psychologists or university chaplain – they are here for us! They provide support and guidance that helps you overcome difficulties and succeed in your studies.

8. Dare to go on a student exchange Make the most of the exchange opportunity offered by your school if you have any hesitation! Exchange teaches a lot and allows you to grow both personally and professionally. It’s wise to start planning for the exchange early in your studies because deadlines come surprisingly fast. Also, familiarize yourself with selection criteria and scholarships with the help of Haaga-Helia’s international experts. The school also offers shorter international trips and projects if a semester-long exchange isn’t possible!

9. Take care of your well-being Physical and mental well-being are your most important resources during your student journey. Strive to eat healthy, exercise regularly and get enough sleep. Admittedly, as a student, it can be challenging to balance these with studies, work and other responsibilities. However, if the world feels overwhelming, take a moment for yourself. The rest of the world can wait.

10. Be open, curious, and interested Be open to new opportunities, curious to learn new things and interested in what’s happening around you. You never know what opportunities will come your way and an open attitude can lead to surprising and rewarding experiences.

I’ve personally found a lot of help from these tips and I believe you will too. Remember to enjoy student life, do your best and boldly seize new opportunities! It’s lovely that you’re at Haaga-Helia!   Meiju Hämäläinen Helgan hallituksen jäsen
